Updated: Oct 13

As a speech therapist for over 14+ years, my mission is to provide effective and accessible speech therapy resources.

I have worked on helping clients successfully implement at home speech sessions with their loved ones.

These tools will help you make the the most impact with minmal supplies during your in-home speech therapy sessions.

This post is all about speech therapy tools.

Speech Therapy Tools: #1 Use a Mirror

A mirror is your best friend during your in home speech therapy sessions. If you don't have a table mirror handy, use the bathroom mirror! Make sure your child can see himself so use a stepping stool if necessary.

Practice your articulation drills with a mirror present. This gives your child immediate visual feedback of their articulators (lips, mouth, tongue, jaw) and a clear visual model of how to produce the sounds (your articulators). Silly and funny faces are welcome.

Speech Therapy Tools: #2 Record Using Your Phone

There's nothing more frustrating than working on a speech therapy goal when the person has NO IDEA it is occurring. How are they supposed to fix a lisp or produce R correctly when they don't realize they are doing anything wrong. Use that record button on your phone and playback the incorrect sounds. Have your child listen to them and start to gain awareness into their errors.

Here's a free worksheet to use to have your child rate themselves!

Speech Therapy Tools: #3 Role Reversal

It's not always so much fun being the "student" and being told you are doing something incorrect. Now it's your turn to do the task both correctly and incorrectly. Have your child rate you!

Speech Therapy Tools: #4 Use A Fidget Toy

Always have a fidget toy on hand to use when targeting your speech goals. This should not be something super exciting like an IPAD. Instead it should be something that they find mildly entertaining, just enough to keep their hands busy. This works best for energetic children who benefit from additional sensory stimulation.
