This post is all about speech therapy ideas.

Speech Therapy Ideas # 1

Children's books. There are SO many ways to target goals using children's books. I'll list a few. Pick out ones that resonate with you and will help to target your child's specific speech goal. The best place to get access to free children's books is online at StoryOneline.net

🌞Bonus: Famous actors and actresses read these books as a free public service :)

Skills to target:

  • ✅ Pick out words with the target speech sound and practice them BEFORE and during reading

  • ✅ Work on WH questions (Pro Tip: Ask chat GPT to write out WH questions related to the childrens book that will be appropriate for your child's age)

  • ✅ Review idioms or metaphors

  • ✅ Ditch the words, talk about the pictures and have your child tell their own story!

Speech Therapy Ideas # 2

Creative Writing Prompts. This one is really fun! Start your child off with a creative writing prompt and have them respond through writing or speaking.

🌞 Bonus: Creative writing allows for more flexibility and fun!

Speech Therapy Ideas # 3

Crafts. Find a cute cut-and-paste activity to make with your child.

🌞 Bonus: This keeps their hands busy which can help some students focus better!

Skills to target:

  • ✅ Following directions

  • ✅ Problem solving

  • ✅ Conversation

  • ✅ Learning new vocabulary words

Speech Therapy Ideas # 4

Play a game. Grab Uno, Monopoly, a Set of cards, Jenga or whatever you have laying around the house. The important mindshift is this: the goal of the game is to target the speech goal. Don't focus so much on the rules of the game... Even better, you can make up your own.

🌞 Bonus: Everyone gets to have fun while playing a game. Usually the rapid pace and turn-taking helps keep kids more focused than a worksheet.

Skills to target:

  • ✅ Articulation. Each time you put down a card, say a word that starts with an S sound

  • ✅ Grammar. Before you take your turn come up with a 3-4 word sentence

  • ✅ Intelligibility. Read out loud all of the Monopoly cards to work on speaking clearly

Thanks for reading! I hope these speech therapy ideas help make your sessions more fun and effective!
