7 Crafty Ways To Turn Every Day Items Into Speech Therapy Games

Updated: 12 hours ago

Tired of coming up with new ideas to practice language? Don't know where to begin? This article will give you easy ways to turn every day items into speech therapy games. As a speech therapist of 14+ years I have found many quick tricks and tips that I am excited to share with you today.

This post is all about speech therapy games

Speech Therapy Games # 1 Uno

Grab a game of Uno and practice working on naming the colors, numbers and don't forget to yell out Uno when you have one card left!

Speech Therapy Games #2 Guess What?

Tear up a sheet of paper, write down random items and pick them out of a cup. Take turns pulling out an item and describe it to the other person without saying the word.

Speech Therapy Games # 3 Storytelling

Grab a random item off your shelf. Use this to inspire a story telling game. Each person goes back and forth and states a sentence that forms a story. This is great for group settings.

Speech Therapy Games # 4 I Spy

I Spy with my little eyes... use the obects around your house or backyard and create a game of I spy. This is great to work on descriptive words (i.e. colors, shape, sizes, function).

Speech Therapy Games #5 Watch A Show

Watch a free youtube short and talk about the characters, make predicitions, label items.. You can also find a show on TV to do the same. See who can spot the most red items and label them. Write them down and compare- whoever found more is the winner!

My list of favorite youtube shorts:

Speech Therapy Games # 6 Labeling Items

Label household items in the kitchen/bedroom/bathroom/living room. Have a race to see who can collect the most labels. After they are collected practice producing the words and putting them into sentences.

Speech Therapy Games #7 PBS Kids

Use the free website PBS kids online to find a fun game! I like the game that allows the child to create a magical fairy tale scene. Speak about each action as you go along! Essentially you can use this game to target any of your speech goals.

2 Quick Tips:

#1 Please remember that when you are targeting speech therapy goals, this is the focus. Do not get too caught up in the game or following the exact directions for the game. For example, if you are focusing on the S sound during a game of Uno keep this as your primary focus. Do not get caught up in the Uno rules, or grammar errors when telling stories, etc. Remember your goal and ONLY target that.

#2 This does not have to be time consuming. Keep your sessions short and sweet. A short fun session that is super engaging is more effective than an hour of your child being bored and checked out.

Thank you for reading this post about speech therapy games.
