The 4 Easiest Speech Therapy Activities You Need To Try Today!

Updated: Jun 25

This post is all about speech therapy activities.

As a speech therapist of 14+ years, I have seen the struggles that parents face when trying to incorporate therapuetic tasks into their daily lives. Who has the time and energy to do all this, plus take care of their children, plus take care of themselves!?

I wote this list based on over a decade of trial and error and also watching other people's mistakes when trying to target speech therapy goals (check out the troubleshooting section at the end)

This post is going to give you the easiest speech therapy activities you can start using right away!

Speech Therapy Activity #1 - Two Truths And A Lie

Have your kid practice their speech sounds by telling you two truths and one lie. You (mom) have to guess which one is which! This should get very interesting...

Use this worksheet to guide the activity. Focus on your child's specific speech goal.

Examples:

  • Practicing the S Sound. If your child needs to practice the S sound have them write their sentences. Then underline the S words and make sure to emphasize these when speaking.

  • Grammar If your child is practicing grammar skills make sure their sentences are written correctly and guide them when speaking about each topic.

Speech Therapy Activity #3 - Imaginary Play

Does your child like to come up with imaginary stories using their toys? Join in on the fun! Remember to pick and focus on one speech goal during the session.

Pro Tip: NEVER choose their favorite toy or you will have a hard time getting a hold of the session. They need to like the toy just enough to participate but not be overly obsessed.

Tip #4 - Crafternoon Delight

Google cheap and free crafts online or on youtube. Use common household objects to make a crafty creation. Take your time through each step and remember to emphasize the speech goal while completing this task.

Speech Therapy Activity Troubleshooting:

❌Scenario A: My child can't read or write

✅Solution A: Don't worry! You can complete the activity out loud.

❌Scenario B: My child is making many mistakes not

related to his speech goal. I want to fix everything.

✅Solution B: Only focus on one specific speech goal agreed upon ahead of time.

❌Scenario C: My child can't focus and keeps jumping from activity to activity

✅Solution C: You control the environment not the behavior. If the child has access to too much stuff then you need to clear the space. Or use an already empty space (i.e. outside, in the park, your bedroom) with one or two chosen items.

❌Scenario D: My child is too focused on the material and won't listen

✅Solution D: Don't ever pick their favorite toy in speech therapy. It needs to be something the like just enough to participate but they should not be overly obsessed with.

❌Scenario E: My child is not listening

✅Solution E: Instead of placing demands, model the langauge or sounds you want to hear and they will absorb the information and (if you are lucky) will repeat it back to you with out you having to ask!

If not don't worry they are still absoring the patterns and expectations for the speech goal.
