Updated: Feb 7

Rapeseed wax is a great choice for natural candle making. Due to its sustainable sourcing, Rapeseed benefits the eco-friendly candle artisan and environmentally aware consumer.

As a candle maker of over a decade and appreciator of all things natural, I  strive to bring light to the lesser-known eco-conscious choices.

In this post, you will learn where Rapeseed comes from, how to use it in candle making, eco-friendly properties and the downsides.

This post is all about natural candle making.

Where does rapeseed wax come from?

The rapeseed plant belongs to the Brassicaceae family, which is also known as the mustard or cabbage family. This plant family includes various vegetables and plants such as mustard, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, in addition to rapeseed.  This natural candle making wax is made by extracting oil from the seeds, which is then purified and turned into a solid.

Is the production of rapeseed sustainable?

Yes.  What sets rapeseed wax apart is its eco-friendly production process. Rapeseed is an easily cultivated crop, requiring minimal pesticides and often thriving without irrigation. This makes it a sustainable source of wax.

How does rapeseed help in achieving zero waste goals?

Rapeseed wax production aligns with the zero-waste ethos. It is a natural byproduct of the rapeseed oil industry, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. This eco-friendly approach resonates with the growing demand for sustainable candle-making materials.

How Should I Use Rapeseed for Candle Making?

Rapeseed can be substituted for other non-natural candle making wax, such as paraffin.  It can be soft so start with using it with vessels.  If you want to use it in a mold, consider using it with a smaller candle with a mold release spray.

General Guidelines for Natural Candle Making Using Rapeseed Candle Wax:

Melt Temp:  ~ 160-180 F

Add Dye: ~ 160 F

Add Fragrance: ~122-140 F @ 6-12%

Pour:  ~ 140-150 F

What do rapeseed wax candles smell like?

Unlike non natural candle making wax, rapeseed wax exudes a subtle fragrance reminiscent of its botanical source. This aromatic touch elevates the sensory experience of candles, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Are rapeseed candles clean burning?

Yes. Candles crafted with rapeseed wax are renowned for their clean and virtually soot-free burn (a common customer complaint).. This characteristic makes them an excellent choice for those who desire a serene ambiance without the mess.

Do rapeseed candles hold fragrance well?

Yes. Rapeseed wax is incredibly receptive to fragrances. Candle artisans find it easy to infuse their creations with delightful scents that linger, enhancing the overall natural candle making experience.

What are the downsides of Rapeseed wax candles?

Rapeseed, a natural candle wax,  is more popular in Europe.  The supply in the USA is limited.  The wax is soft, so it performs better with a vessel.  When using a candle mold, it can easily bend or morph, especially when trying to release it from the mold.
