This post is all about how to avoid burn out as an SLP. As a seasoned speech therapist (14+ years) and someone who gets bored easily, I have tried MANY strategies to avoid burn out. I will share the ones that worked best for me.

Switch Settings


People get so afraid to switch settings. Instead they get stuck in one setting and resort to complaining for a decade. It's ok to switch jobs, switch settings...

Save Your Money


This one is easier said than done but save up a year emergency fund. Take a part time job. Understand that you will be supported if you need.

Learn About Investing


Learn how to make your money work for you so you don't have to work as a speech therapist forever working for them.

Travel Therapy


Take up a travel position for one year and try a new city!

Co- Friends


Befriend your co-workers and start a few happy hour traditions monthly.

Create Materials | How To Avoid Burn Out


Think outside the box and different ways you can contribute to the field. This may mean coaching other beginner SLPs, creating materials, doing research or becoming a professor.

Learn New Techniques


Take CEU courses or take up opportunities in new settings to learn new techniques. Then you can incorporate them into your sessions. The most recent one I have been incorporating is mindfulness.

Speech Doesn't Define You


Make sure to carve out time outside of work to take care of yourself!
